Right after finishing The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry, I started this memoir by Kate Summerscale about a famous crime, the murder of little Saville Kent in Read, in 1860. It has remained famous because it was the first murder to be investigated by the newly created detective force in Scotland Yard. Mr Whicher, the detective, has served many times as the basis for fictional detectives...

If you like this kind of books, I recommend that you read Sarah Wise's The Italian Boy and The Blackest Streets.
