Cargill's Castle

One of only a few castles ever built in NZ but this one is now a wreck and inacessible although now surrounded by a subdivision. The castle build was completed in 1877 but it was gutted by fire in 1892 and Cargill could not meet the cost of replacing all the wooden furnishings. It has had a number of owners over the years but is now a ruin.

Cargills Castle sits high on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Also very well known is Tunnel Beach. The Cargill Family had a 60 metre tunnel access constructed which is still the only access to the quiet little beach. The story goes that Cargill's daughters could swim there in privacy.
