Day 85 - Gerard Manly Hopkins(1844-1889) was an English poet and Jesuit priest whose posthumous fame established him among the leading Victorian poets but not until the 1930s. His poems influenced T.S.Eliot, W.H.Auden and Dylan Thomas. After studying classics at Oxford he began his noviciate at Manresa House, Roehampton. The house (originally called Parkstead House ) became part of Whitelands College in 2001 and is now part of the University of Roehampton. Hopkins moved to various cities as a priest and finally to Dublin where he was a classics professor. His eyesight began to fail and after suffering ill health for several years he died of typhoid fever aged only 44.
