The woodcutters

This is Lorna father Albert's account of the September day in 1931 or 1932 on which he and Lorna's brother Theo took down a maple sycamore in the family's garden in Sheffield. It is a tale of tools that break, and a wardrobe malfunction.

This account adds some context to the photograph that we posted yesterday,  in which Albert appeared rather smartly dressed for gardening. Here he makes reference to his fine attire, drawing comparisons with that of his more scruffy son.

The Auntie Daisy mentioned is the sister of Lorna's paternal grandfather, and so Lorna's great aunt. We know a little about her from the self-published memoirs of Lorna's first cousin Margaret (blipped on 27th May 2020, 4th from the left). Great Auntie Daisy was a gentle, timid spinster aunt. Although she never married, she was known to have had two (rather unhappy) love affairs. She worked in the family's fish merchant business as a cashier, and lived with her brother (Lorna's paternal grandfather) and sister-in-law (Lorna's Grannie) in Bristol.
