Grace Darling - heroine

Yesterday, I visited the grave of Grace Darling at Bamburgh whose bravery in rescuing survivors from the stricken SS Forfarshire in 1838 when it crashed on to Big Harcar Rock, a mile from the Longstone lighthouse on the outer Farne Islands, is celebrated by the RNLI and by many others. Grace became renowned as a heroine and won the hearts of the nation. The courageous rescue was reported by national newspapers and her story spread internationally. Grace became immortalised in plays, songs and  poems.
