At Rutland Water

An ogre lurks
beneath the trees,
scowls and squints
at all it sees.

Its pointed ears hear
nothing that it likes:
walkers, bikers,
litter-dropping tikes.

Back in the day, when it
was young and vicious,
it scared away the lot.
Now less malicious,

it hides among gnarled roots
in grass and nettle,
eyes closed tight - a vain
attempt to settle.
