I actually thought he was amazing and was fairly certain I've seen him before.  He cropped up here so you can get a size comparison against a massive bluebottle - they're whopping!  I think he'd make a great shaggy teddy bear although his behaviour is a bit gruesome, laying eggs into caterpillars for a bit of fresh meat when they hatch.

Speaking of which, Rich isn't keen on the precedent he set yesterday although I did get my dinner cooked for me after his big ride today - it may be the last time that happens ;D
