Former Butcher’s Shop

The pig, cattle and sheep murals probably date from the 1930s, the earliest mention of this address as a butcher’s. Back then, it was a traditional Australian butcher. More recently, it was a Greek butchery called Thessalia and, at some stage, an Italian meat and smallgoods shop. There’s a lot of Vietnamese butchers in Marrickville but this doesn’t seem to have been one of them.

It’s now Cornersmith Picklery, an offshoot of a popular local cafe.

I passed a fancy new butcher shop on the way, one without a counter, just a big wooden block. The butcher had brought out a whole carcass and was cutting off bits to order.

Thanks for hosting Marlieske.
