Propriety and impropriety

Today we dropped into the house we are renovating to see how the new foundations are coming on. At least we have finished the rippy-outy and got started on the putty-back.

Building houses with little or no proper foundations was common in Georgian days. It's less easy to imagine people still doing that in the 1970s, when the rear extension was built. Somebody did. We also found the concrete floor was only 2 to 3 inches thick. But hey ho.

We have to do this in sections. Dig a trench the full length of the wall and it will fall down. So the blip shows one section of proper foundation. For an improper foundation, see the extra.
