Pond Visit

After breakfast we drove a few miles north to check in on our favorite little pond. It’s been a couple of months since we last visited, and we were not disappointed • We expected to find a mallard or two, and sure enough there were a couple pairs dabbling the edges. What we didn’t expect was this lone double-crested cormorant! He was quite comfortable and familiar with his surroundings but he seemed preoccupied swimming back and forth constantly scanning the sky. We assumed he was looking for others to join him there, or fly overhead as an invitation to come along? • The little pond was full of lily pads and white lilies, with cat-o-nine-tails tall and erect as if protectors of this little hidden paradise. There were few songbirds present but a group of ravens were quick to alert our arrival to all of the pond’s inhabitants. They seemed quite upset to have us walking about • It was a lovely respite before we took a vigorous walk nearby. Our steps will help ease the pasta dinner that’s on tonight’s menu for dinner • Mangiare!
