James Douglas Earl of Angus who raised the Cameronian Regiment, as part of the British Army, in 1689 at Douglas near Lanark

He died 3 years later leading his troops into battle against the French at Steinkirk in Flanders

The Cameronians continued to give distinguished service in every major
campaign of the British Army for 279 years until it was disbanded at Douglas on 14 May 1968
