Sea Henge

We walked along the coast path from a large, old village called Thornham (see the village sign in extras.) It is now full of many holiday and second homes, with some large new houses. The wealth of many who live and stay there is obvious. You may also notice the old Bentley cars passing in the village sign image.
Our walk took us to the site of the Sea Henge that was built 4000 years ago on what was then marsh land. The original timbers of the two circles have been removed to local museums and there is a replica 1.5 miles away inland. Carbon dating has given a precise date to the year and summer it was built and its purpose as a funeral site, where some bodies were left to be picked by birds. I can see the attraction of being left on this beautiful, changing, wild stretch of coastline. The strong wind was whipping up the waves and spray (see the second extra photo) and made our walk out quite cold. Our return walk was much quicker.
