Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Trees - Lady Margaret (recorded November-December 1969, Sound Techniques, Chelsea, London)
R.I.P. Celia Humphris (1951? - 11 January 2021)
I learned from listening to Cerys Matthews' show this morning that Celia Humphris, lead singer with Trees, died earlier this month. She doesn't have her own Wikipedia page but from online searches it seems she had an interesting and varied life. She joined Trees from drama college where she learned dance, drama and singing (with Jane Seymour); she was 19 when she made the first Trees album, The Garden Of Jane Trelawney; her father was an illustrator for the Eagle, the Swift and Ladybird books; she married the disc jockey Pete Drummond; became a voice-over artist; recorded announcements for the Northern Line; sold real estate in France, where she lived as a property developer; and sang on albums by Dodson and Frogg and also Judy Dyble (Trees played their first gig, in 1969, at the church hall of All Saints' in Powis Square with Trader Horne, of whom Judy Dyble was one half, having left the Fairports).
Like Fairport Convention, the band Trees were influenced by American folk and psychedelic outfits, such as Joni Mitchell and Jefferson Airplane. By 1969 the Fairports were starting to explore their English heritage more. Trees at this time were mixing their own songs with their own treatments of traditional English and American ballads to great effect. They only made two albums which sold badly at the time but were increasingly influential and highly regarded by future generations, so that a 4CD set of all their released output plus demos, sessions and so on was released (and bought by me) in 2020.
Trees' version of Lady Margaret  may have been adapted from an acoustic version by Buffy Ste-Marie made in 1966.
All About Eve's version of She Moves Through The Fair and the 18th Day Of May's version of Lady Margaret  were probably inspired by Trees versions.
