Burgate Wood

A beautiful day, so we extended one of our usual walking routes from home to take in Burgate Little Green & Burgate Wood (about 7.5 miles altogether). The wood is a SSSI - unfortunately there's no public access, but a wide track runs alongside the perimeter bank & ditch on all sides & it's possible to view the ancient coppice stools. The coppice is mainly hornbeam, with oak standards; dog's mercury is much in evidence on the sunlit woodland floor. Apparently there are a number of other interesting species, including a wild species of Pulmonaria, & also some earthworks, excavated originally by local archaeologist Basil Brown (of Sutton Hoo fame!)
