The Great Glen

Meall Fuar-mhonaidh - summit 699m

One of the finest views of the whole of Loch Ness and the Great Glen.

Here the knife of the Maker slipped through the Highlands and the top triangle of the highlands slid 64miles* in much the same fashion as the San Andreas fault in the USA. Interestingly, I had always wrongly assumed that the north section had moved northeast resulting in the displaced look of the coastline of the Moray firth. But according to the geological matching of the rocks on either side of the fault, it moved the opposite direction altogether! The fault is very deep and still active, although there have only been occasional moderate tremor in recent history.

*(approximately the distance from Fort William to Inverness)
