Ross-on-Wye

When we arrived at our Airbnb the hosts recommended the Royal Hotel as a good place to eat and/or drink with a nice outdoor area.  We took a look at it yesterday and today we went there for morning coffee. The outside tables do have a great view over the river and surrounding countryside. So we stayed for lunch, two very nice veggie meals.

After lunch we took a walk by the river after a quick trip into the town.  There are a lot of independent shops in Ross, the sign outside this fishing shop caught my eye, "Maggots £1 per pint.  Anyfin is Possible".

Later we sat outside and watched the tennis from Queens.  Andy Murray won his first match.

We're just back from a short walk to The Prospect, an open area of grassland and trees with a stunning view.   It was presented to the town by John Kyrle (1637-1724), an English philanthropist, locally known as 'the Man of Ross'.  It can be reached by walking through the churchyard of St Mary's Church, a very old and extensive area given over partly to wild grasses and flowers.  Very interesting.  Kyrle is buried in the chancery.
