Tiny tree

A hazelnut fell on the lawn
and waited for rain to fall.
It cracked its little brittle shell
as damp and sunshine made it swell.
A root grew long. A shoot grew tall.
We pulled it from the smooth green lawn.

But do not think us heartless brutes;
there grew another hundred shoots,
each one a hazel tree.
