HISTORIC UCKFIELD TOUR: THE OLD GRAMMAR SCHOOL

This is the Old Grammar School – it's a Solicitor's Office now, but it's not difficult to imagine schoolboys of old in their straw boaters and starched collars (books tucked inside their trousers in case of the dreaded cane  (I've read Tom Brown's Schooldays!) making their mournful way to school every day… 'Toward school with heavy looks' as local poet William Shakespeare once put it.
Shakespeare also said, 'Thou hast most traitorously corrupted the youth of the realm in erecting a grammar school' so he probably wasn't a great fan.
You'll never catch me going to school – I have enrolled in the great University of Life, where I don't have to wear a uniform – or any clothes at all!…
