Pisces In The National Museum of Scotland

Today I paid a visit to the Grand Gallery of the National Museum of Scotland to see New York artist Jason Hackenwerth's recently unveiled balloon sculpture, Pisces. The impressive piece is part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival 2013.

The piece is Hackenwerth's interpretation of the Greek legend of Aphrodite, the Goddess of love and her son, Eros, who escaped the fury of the monster Typhon by transforming themselves in a tightly woven spiral of two fish. This figure later became a constellation called Pisces.

It took three staff members nearly six days to blow up the 10,000 balloons needed to build Pisces. It was built on site by Hackenwerth and his assistant Leah Blair who wove the balloons into this stunning three dimensional structure.
