We have lift-off!

A De Havilland Canda Beaver ZK-CKH taking off from the local airfield. I was told there are only 3 in New Zealand, but there are others still operating in Alaska. As when they break-down or wear out, the engines can be rebuilt, and they can take to the air again.

The serial number was changed to NZ6010 in August 1959. Purchased in 1956 for use in the Antarctic it arrived in New Zealand near the end of July that year. The aircraft was assembled at Hobsonville and flew south arriving at Wigram on the 11th of August. Named "City of Auckland" in December 1956 at a ceremony held at Ardmore. Shipped to the Antarctic on HMNZS Endeavour in December 1956, it was used in the Antarctic in 1957, first flying there on 13 January of that year, and 1958 before being flown back to New Zealand in Globemaster 52-955 during October 1958. The aircraft headed south again on board the "USS Atka" and arrived at Scott Base on the 17 December 1959.
