Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Caviar, anyone?

I came across the scene of a murder this morning. The victim, a frog, the villain, a heron. In normal years, by mid-March the small lochan in the middle of the dunes is packed with mating frogs and toads and awash with their spawn. The herons and gulls feast on the amphibians but discard the egg-swollen ovaries as they are incredibly sticky. This year the cold weather has delayed mating and this is the only frog that I saw - at the moment, the lochan is a frog and toad free zone.

Yes, I am afraid that that is a flayed frog's leg sticking up out of the mass of eggs. Nature isn't always pretty, far from it!
