It's No Bovver - For A Hover

Apparently, hoverflies do their thing on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. And there are around 6000 species!

Adult hoverflies like this one feed exclusively on nectar and pollen. It's their larvae that are really valuable to the gardener, munching their way through plant-sucking insects such as greenfly and thrips. They are the good guys! Have a look at this one LARGE by pressing L on your keyboard.

Begonia semperflorens are originally from Brazil though they are almost as widespread as the hoverfly. I'm betting lots of UK blippers will be using them as Summer bedding now that winter's gone there. This plant is next to the driveway of my rental home in Maleny, Queensland.
