Seaside Dinner

As I've mentioned before, it's wonderful traveling with Thai friends who know the area (or at least are good people to get lost with!) Tonight it was suggested we try out this seaside restaurant. All of the tables overlook the ocean, and part of the seating is built on a platform that is over the sea a bit. At low tide, the water is a few feet away, but at high tide, the waves come up underneath. As the sun went down, the waiters came around to light the candles at each table. It made for a great atmosphere.

Another aspect of this native buddy style traveling is trusting these friends to order the food. They always ask what I'd like to eat, but usually I follow their suggestions. Tonight it was grilled crab, fried fish, garlic oysters, tom yam (spicy coconut milk and shrimp soup), rice and raw shrimp soaked in fish sauce.

The last item was new for me. Supposedly the salty fish sauce kills any bad bacteria and somehow the shrimp don't pick up much of the fish sauce flavor. They actually weren't too bad (once I got over the raw idea and floppy texture.)
