Saint Joan of Arc Church

We are now in Rouen and this morning we went to see the Church of Saint Joan of Arc.  The original church was destroyed during the Second World War and this new church, inaugurated in May 1979, was built on the site where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake in 1431.  Inside, the 13 stained-glass windows, dating from 1530, form a glass wall of 500 square metres and were spectacular.  They were originally set in the church of Saint-Vincent which was destroyed during the Second World War but luckily someone had the foresight to take them out before the war and keep them safe until they were incorporated into this modern church some 40 years later.

In extas is the magnificent front of the main cathedral, which is being renovated at the moment, and the golden statue of St George fighting off the dragon high up on the top of the chancel roof, spotted by Mr Sk!
