Rainbow

A day on the road and a day of all kinds of weather.

Hubby and I headed inland, leaving a calm morning behind us and into just about gale force nor' west wind. We had only planned on going to Lake Lyndon where the lake was choppy, blue sky and drifts of huge white clouds rolling through the sky but you know how it goes, we continued on to Lake Pearson, someone wanted to see some autumn colour. It was windy there to but not quite as bad, the autumn colour was just about passed its best and the lake was rather low but some good shots were taken. Hubby suggested we carry on to the small settlement of Arthurs Pass for a bite to eat where the sky was thunderous as heavy showers rolled on through.

I was amazed today with the light, small beams touching the mountain tops and onto the Waimakariri river but it was only for a few quick moments at a time as the clouds were travelling so fast.

It's not often I have the chance to photograph a rainbow, this was taken at Klondyke Corner.

The first attempt to establish a town near Arthurs Pass was made between the confluence of the Bealey and Waimakariri Rivers. It was named Klondyke Corner for the site was very cold, receiving no sunshine in winter, hence its name is reminiscent of the Alaskan gold rush settlement. The year 1865 saw about 100 people encamped; 208 sections were surveyed and an ambitious street plan mapped out. Eighteen months later everyone but the telegraph operator and a police sergeant had moved to the much sunnier present day site of Bealey.

A great day, the road to Arthurs Pass and beyond to the West Coast is worth exploring, through the rugged mountains, beside braided rivers, a passing coal train, lots of bush, lakes and so many walks - it's got it all!

Enjoy the rainbow - actually I think there's a double if you look closely :)
