The Carry On Book Club

A very fun venue for book club today on the m/v LOTUS moored at the south end of Lake Union.   It’s a hotel and meeting/event spot with 5 rooms for rent.   Of course it was almost freezing out and VERY windy from the north so it was jumping about a lot,  but no rain and 8 of us really enjoyed being on her.  The hostess for today lives in Port Townsend so drove down this morning in the snow(!) and we had a lovely lunch on this amazing beautifully crafted wooden boat built in 1909…it was very modern then with electric lights, intercom and diesel engine.   A step back in time…just look at those wonderful arts and crafts style tiles on the fireplace!!!!   Wish that board hadn’t been there but you get the idea…. If you are interested you can learn and see more here. (lots of photos  and video)  My photo of today with white caps on the lake in the extra

The book?   Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus about a brilliant female scientist who couldn’t get anywhere professionally in the early 60s….. this group had all sorts of personal stories about these women’s place issues …I’d like to know how this hits a much younger generation..will give it to my daughters in law.    It’s quite funny, and sad, with an amazing dog and touches on all sorts of issues not exactly resolved today.   AND the author as well as the main characters are rowers!  The author rowed here in Seattle….this is her first, I think brilliant, book.

And now I suppose we have to turn on the tv and see what’s happened with the voting today….ugh.
The most horrendous news of all , a   shooting death in a Seattle high school today.   The news is all so bad, we have to make an effort to enjoy something from every day.
