Large Bristle Fly

This spiky tachnid is somewhat bigger than a big blowfly.

In the extra shot is a very small praying mantis nymph on a young apple. The nymph is probably from the hatching 19 days ago. It is still in its first instar, which means it has eaten, but not very much.
