The retail chain reached its peak in 2004 with over 9000 stores worldwide. However, through poor leadership, they ended up filing for bankruptcy in 2010 with about $1bn debt. They chose to focus on their retail business and ignored the emergence of DVD by mail and video streaming services. They even walked away from completing a favourable deal to buy the fledgling company called Netflix!
