The Lozarithm Lens

Avebury

To celebrate the conclusion of dealing with our father's estate, my brother, the Spotlight Kid, and I arranged to meet for lunch at the Waggon and Horses in Beckhampton, along with Mrs Spotlight and Christiescruff, to thank them for all their help. The inn had been chosen for its proximity to Avebury as Mrs S. had expressed a wish to see Avebury Manor, and so they had driven over from Dorset.

We were going to approach Avebury on foot from the bottom of West Kennet Avenue and walk along the sarsen stones, but police were in the process of putting out No Parking cones in readiness for the Summer Solstice celebrations in two days time, including the lay-by where we were planning to park, so we had to drive on to the NT car park.

As it turns out, Avebury Manor doesn't open on a Wednesday ("It's in the guide book", repeat to infinity), so instead we did a tour of the stone circle and henge, followed by drinks in the NT café beside the Great Barn, visits to the Keiller Museum and the Archaology Museum, and a short footpath walk from the churchyard up to the River Kennet and towards Avebury Trusloe, and across a track past a friendly horse that I pulled up some grass for, and briefly back along the road to the car park.

This picture is similar to ones I have been unable to resist taking before, showing one of the stones in the south-east sector of the stone circle, with the Red Lion just visible in the background. Other pictures are in the set linked to below.

Afterwards, I went on to Marlborough for a shop in Waitrose and had there my first free cappuccino since I got a My Waitrose card, something I was disproportionately pleased about.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Nick Drake - Riverman (1969)
Nick Drake sadly died in relative obscurity aged 26, but is probably more popular now than at any time before. I never got to see him live, but I did like his music and remember sitting in Sutton Park with some friends and a transistor radio listening to his session on John Peel's Top Gear programme. This day would have been his 65th birthday.
