The Gatekeeper

Yesterday's journal was all about housing gone wrong.

Today we go in the opposite direction by visiting the rejuvenated 'New Gorbals'.

This image shows an example of the newer housing which has become a landmark in a previously derelict part of Glasgow.

The 3 ½ metre sculpture is suspended between two wooden pillars. The idea is of an angel guarding the entrance to the community. Beneath her is a five-by-six metre framed photograph showing a woman walking through a stone corridor. The picture was taken in New York.

There was a clause inserted in the contracts of every building firm that secured a deal to build the flats that 1% of the finance must be set aside for Art. We therefore have Art thriving in what in the past would have been the most unlikely of areas.
