AD79. In just 24 hours, two cities in the Bay of Naples were buried by a catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This event preserved the cities under ash so that when they were uncovered some 1600 years later it gave us a glimpse into the everyday life of citizens of the Roman Empire.

Today we went to see the British Museum's exhibition 'Life and Death, Pompeii and Herculaneum'. It was an amazing and moving visit. Well worth getting up at 6.00am and braving the heat of the City.

This blip was taken very early this morning just after the museum opened. Later in the day it was difficult to get past all the visitors coming up and down these steps. There will have been an estimated 15 000 visitors at the museum by the end of today.
