When Norman was posted for a spell of duty in Venezuela, Shell decided that we could cross the Atlantic by boat instead of flying. This would have involved several different flights which with a four months old baby would have been rather trying. So we were booked on a beautiful ship called “The Flandre”. of the French Line. We boarded her at Southampton and on a two week voyage crossed the Atlantic then called at Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados and Trinidad before arriving in Venezuela. We went ashore at all the ports and it was like being on a cruise. Being a French boat the food was delicious, and wine was served with.lunch and dinner.. Being in our twenties it was an amazing experience. Baby Anna was no trouble at all, and when we went ashore on some excursions we were able to leave her on board in the care of the crew.
We have so many marvellous memories and loads of photos, but not many souvenirs. Somehow this fan has survived and has come in useful in our current hot weather.
