Late in 2015 Storm Desmond destroyed parts of the Keswick to Threlkeld railway path and swept away some bridges too. It used to be a favourite walk but I haven’t been on it since it was partially rerouted, bridges rebuilt, the surface covered with tarmac and reopened about 4 years ago.
Today was the day. Big breakfast and bus to Keswick. Got off before bus station to avoid extra walking. Through the new tunnel and then three ladies passed. One told me I was walking on the wrong side. I said that all the bikes were whizzing along on that side and I’d prefer to see them coming. She said there were signs. I admit that I didn’t look at all the signs on the posts.
They walked ahead and worse was to come. She stopped at the next post, waited for me and pointed to the keep left sign! I avoided getting into an argument.
At the first metal bridge (in the photo) I decided I’d had enough of the tarmac and turned back. Fortunately there were some very pleasant chatty people on the return route.
Chips in Keswick (much cheaper than an ice cream) and the bus home.
A selection of others in the extra.
