A Study of a Supper Silhouette
At one time this Spring, there were 20-25 blue heron nests on the island at Kensington Metro Park. Now, I can only see 3. The babies have grown up to fly on their own, so the entire family vacates the nest...until next Spring.
The scene here illustrates feeding time, Both mom and dad go off hunting or fishing, swallow the catch, and eventually regurgitate it up to feed the chicks. As the chicks grow, the parents will leave the whole fish in the nest for the chicks to pick at.
Mom (or dad) is on the left here and is yakking up the goods into Junior's throat. It can be quite a violent process with hungry babies, and the mom/dad can only take so much until they fly away. Until the next meal.
