Book binding and a record of difficult times
I learned how to bind books as part of my Graphic Design Degree in the early eighties. My Head of Faculty was a Master Bookbinder and encouraged us to take up the craft and keep the skill alive.
To do it properly you need a lot of heavy duty equipment (book press, guillotine etc) so I have had to improvise.
The leather provided by my neighbour Lucy. Book cloth seemed too old fashioned.
The contents of the book... well... it's a record of my time dealing with breast cancer. I kept a photographic diary of everything, from the banal to the gruesome.
I don't expect anyone other than medical professionals will see this but it wraps things up for me.
I have created closure.
