Duomo from Giardino di Boboli
Back Blip
A lovely warm day, a wee bit warmer than home. I have bought a Firenze Card, wihch for €85 offers 3 days to go around the major tourist attractions. And you can renew for a further 2 days for €0 if you don't get around everything. Daughter, grandchildren and I are off to Florence for the day. We get dropped off at a local railway station, which costs up €1.60 to travel in to the centre of the city. We walk to Palazzo Pitti, which has 5 attractions in itself. Along the way I get the mandatory photo of the Ponte Vecchio, Extra 1 taken on the way to the Palazzo Pitti. We have coffee and a bite to eat in the café at the Palazzo Pitti The main blip is a iew of the Duomo is taken from the Giardino di Bobli, af grandson and I got lost. We visit the Galleria Palatina, artworks collected by the Medici family when they ruled Florence, and Galleria d'arte moderna, a collection of art from Neoclassicism and Romantic, Macchiaioli school to the 1930s in the part of the palace where the Grand Dukes of Habsburg-Lorraine resided. Then off for some lunch in a wee restaurant set away from the tourist areas.
After lunch we walked across the Ponte Vecchio tothe Palazzo Vecchio, Extra 2. Outside the building, there is a repplica of Michaelangelo's David.. There is a concert in the main hall, and no more tickets to go up the tower. However the kids love the museum. By now it is time for afternoon coffee. Fortuntely the cafés around teh Duomo are very touristy, so we can get a cappucino and a cake, and the kids have ciambelle, italian doughnuts, eaten in double quick time. Then we head back to the railway station to get the train home.
Extra 3 shows the view looking down on Florence at dusk from the property where we are staying
