Around the Block

O Globo 100

The Rio-based national newspaper is exactly one hundred years old; today’s edition here in the hands of our local newsagent!

It’s a big thing, with a commemorative edition on Sunday just passed, exhibitions and even a mass in an important church downtown.

Here are some statistics about Brazil comparing 1925/2025…and worth recalling that my recently passed-away mother was also born in 1925!

Population: 33 million/210 million
Living in the countryside: 80%/12%
Life expectancy: 35 years/80 years
Baby mortality before 1st birthday: 160 per thousand/10 per thousand
Illiterate: 70%/5%

The Sunday edition was the biggest they have ever printed…see extra…over 500 pages, 14 sections, 2kg!

In other news, with Dd working, I walked to a stormy Ipanema, back and around the block, covering over 20,000 steps before lunch!
