'Members and their wives'

A picture of one of the professional associations I belong to, taken this evening in the Royal Museum.

Now what's interesting to me is that I've belonged to the same professional association since 1984. The first year I was a member, I received an invitation to the annual conference, held each time in different locations depending upon where the president is employed (this year in Edinburgh), stating that 'members were welcome to bring their wives'.

The image that this raised in my mind has remained with me to this day.
