Barker Tower

This is Barker Tower looking across the Ouse to Lendal Tower. There used to be a ferry service across the river until the bridge was built. There was also a chain between the two, used as a city defence and to stop boats for tolls. Now they are rather fancy pigeon perches.

Town was busy today. Saw some bike paramedics training. I'm not sure if it's my imagination but I'm pretty sure bike paramedics are a fairly recent thing. I don't remember seeing them around before. They were practicing going up stairs. Quite impressive because they had to fling themselves into the set of stairs very enthusiastically to have any chance of making it to the top. They all made it up but tended to topple when they got there. They should recruit some BMXers to show them how it's done. I would have blipped them but I suspect they already thought they were pretty cool...

Also saw a wedding photographer doing his thing in the Museum Gardens. The couple were good-looking, happy, relaxed and clearly enjoying the opportunity to show off their effortlessly photogenic smiles. The photographer, on the other hand, seemed to think he was a directing a war film. He was dressed in combat gear and kept screaming 'STAND-BY!' (he appeared to be saying this to the bride and groom; there wasn't an assistant in sight). He also adopted an ultra-wide leg squat and looked like he was bracing for a bomb blast whenever he prepared to take a photo. Then there was a barked, 'LET'S GO AGAIN!'
It was wonderfully entertaining.

Went to see 'Sin Nombre' at the cityscreen. Amazing. An incredibly moving and tense film about immigrants trying to cross the border into America. It won a cinematography award at Sundance and it's easy to see why.
