Written on the Steel

There is this Japanese scription on the blade of my katana. I am not totally sure how it is supposed to be translated correctly (or is it even written totally correctly), but based on internet it quite freely states something like:

"There were and are patriots believing in the God."

The sentence comes from the movie The Last Samurai. Nice film starred by Tom Cruise.
