This photo wasn't taken today, it was in fact taken last year at the end of an 11 month deployment on a nuclear submarine.
It shows the initial steps to one of the two legal initiation ceremonies left within the Royal Navy, the issue of the submariners badge, a new submariner has to work very hard learning all about each submarine he serves on learning where everything is, all about the associated systems and everyones job. At the end of this he is handed a glass of rum with his submariners badge in the bottom and he is expected to drink the rum in one movement and catch the badge between his teeth, he is then a member of an exclusive members only club.

i earned mine in 1993 and i still serve proudly.
