The Navvies Monument

I ran past this monument during an orienteering event today. It was so unsual I stopped to read the inscription and had to go back afterwards to take a photo.

Bramhope Tunnel runs for over 2 miles and was built for the Leeds & Thisk Railway between 1846 and 1849. Over 2,000 men worked on its construction and once completed a memorial was erected for those who lost their lives. This memorial is a replica of the northern port and records the names of 24 miners and excavators (navvies) who died. It is in the churchyard of All Saints Parish Church, Otley.
