Balfour battery, South Ronaldsay

I got the bus to St. Margaret's Hope and walked out to Hoxa Head in sunshine with quite a few heavy showers to provide variety. I was out of the wind in one of the concrete WWII searchlight emplacements on the cliff-top when two peregrines screamed low overhead. Far too fast for a picture. I think it may have been an adult sort of driving off one of its own young. About 25 kittiwakes were on the cliff. That is actually more than I remember seeing there before. The cliffs at Hoxa Head used to be athrong with kittiwakes- one fisherman says that you couldn't hear yourself think for the racket. They may be coming back. I walked along the west cliffs past the Balfour battery and onto the road back to the Hope. More here.
