Pukeko #2

The weather has been a 'mixed bag' today. Beautiful sunrise, bitter wind, thunder and plenty of rain with sun now breaking out late afternoon.

After yesterdays capture of mother and chick I went back today but there were no chicks, hardly surprising with the weather, however, there were a few Pukekos foraging amoungst the reeds. This image shows the distinctive feet with the long claws used to hold the shoots which are then stripped by their powerful bill. Also seen is a tiny bit of the white undertail which is flickered with every step.

The Pukeko or NZ Swamp Hen is a member of the rail family.

No row boat or mud needed today for this shot - just a quick jump out of the car, no lingering, take the shot and away I went, far to cold to be hanging around.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, just a quiet one for our family :)
