A clouded view

Watched a very pleasant and gentle film last night - Afternoons with Magueritte, starring Gerard Depardieu who is now vast! Recommended for an undemanding and feel good movie.

Back to work this morning. Out of the 21 children on roll (!) 9 are absent with something horrible. Smallest girl had been away since Friday and had a wobbly at the gate so was taken home again. Half an hour later a huge tractor rolled up and this little vision in pink leapt down and ran into school - she felt better!

Tonight is the Ladies' Book Club, not sure if I'm quite ready for it but we shall see. We should be discussing 'A Week in December' by Sebastian Faulkes. I quite liked it but not hugely. I think he was trying to be humourous and that's not what you expect from Mr Faulkes so I was confused! I shall be recommending  'Let the Great World Spin' by Colum McCann - a very unusually and beautifully written book looking at the lives of eight New Yorkers whose lives are somehow connected. It has as its connecting focus the astonishing feat by funambulist (I just learnt this!!) Phillippe Petit who in 1974 tightrope-walked between the Twin Towers. If you haven't seen the DVD 'Man on Wire', a documentary about this, do!! Totally gob-smacking.

The mist has now descended and it is lashing.
