Contingency Plans

With no snow on what would have been the first leg of our trip we got the train to take us from Bodø to Lønsdal. This took us from sea level to 500m and well above the snow line. Lønsstua is a DNT (Den Norske Turistforening) hut belonging to BOT (Bodø og Omegns Turistforenings) that is only 500m from the station. A wee ski down the road got us there and in the afternoon we had a short excursion to test our navigation skills placing a snow shovel at a predefined point that hopefully our partner who went out second would find. I made sure mine was well out in the open and visible, just in case my (or my partners) navigation wasn't spot on. Unfortunately Petrina didn't do the same and Kathy returned snow shovelless - ah well it'll still be there tomorrow and Petrina's confident she can find it again.

The forecast for the next couple of days is a bit stormy, so we may be here for a while before heading cross country to hopefully join our original route five huts in at Saltfjellstua. It's just good to be in a hut, in the snow even if we're only 500m from the railway. Those were my thoughts as I climbed into the top bunk at the end of the day. My next thoughts are not exactly publishable as I almost joined Rancidand in the bottom bunk - there were a few slats missing from my bed!

Today's photo is another of Mick's contingency plans - if there's no snow on which to pull the pulk, simply stick it on a trolley.

Rancidand's version of the day.
