Thursday 2 September 2010: Unstaged - community nominations
As you know, the final Unstaged competition - 'The Theatre of Everyday Life' - closed yesterday. The response has been truly incredible, with well over 3,500 images submitted from every corner of the globe.
One of those images is going to earn a very lucky someone a Canon 5D MKII, £500 cash and a lifetime Blipfoto membership (not to mention a Lumix LX3 for two others and more full memberships than you can shake a stick at).
A panel of judges (which includes our hero Jon Snow) is standing by to agonise over the final decision, but first it's up to you, the Blipfoto community, to decide which entries are put in front of them.
We've devised a very simple and fair way for everyone to take part in the community nominations. Click on the link below and, providing your have five or more entries in your journal, you'll be presented with a randomly selected Unstaged entry. Decide if you think it's worthy of nomination or not, click the appropriate button and you'll be presented with another randomly selected entry. And so on.
You'll never see or get to vote on the same entry twice, so please consider your choices carefully. The final judging panel will be thinking about the theme and how well the finalists meet it, so we'd ask you to do the same - if an entry doesn't scream 'The Theatre of Everyday Life' to you, you shouldn't nominate it.
There's no limit on the number of entries you can view and nominate (in fact, you'll eventually see them all if you click enough times) and you don't have to do it all in one go - you can drop back in at any time and pick up where you left off.

You have until midday UK time on Thursday 9 September to nominate. Any questions, drop a comment below.
We're also delighted to tell you that we'll be announcing the winners on the evening of Monday 27 September, at Channel 4 headquarters in London. If you've taken part in Unstaged, or make it to the list of finalists (to be announced once voting has finished), we'd love you to join us there. Spaces are limited, so please leave a comment below if you're interested in coming along.
That's it - happy nominating!

Smart. I presume that all entries have a "seen by voter n times" counter so that they get spread out evenly between everyone popping in to vote?
~ wingpig

Sounds like a much better way than the last competition because a number of my subscribers implied that they would vote for me when they commented on my daily entries (for the Scotland at Play) so I'm absolutely sure that happened with other blippers too.
Hope the random selection works as wingpig says.

Don't worry, we've done (and will keep doing) everything we can to make sure it's as fair as possible. Ultimately, the factor which will most dictate fairness will be the number of nominators and the number of nominations we receive, so encourage everyone to take part!

Can I humbly request that the buttons for 'nominate' and 'skip' be a little further apart, for the benefit of those of us with iPhones and large thumbs?
~ drcraig

@drcraig - if that's what the doctor prescribes... 'tis done!
~ Joe

Thanks Joe, that's just what the doctor ordered.

Thanks Joe.

Sounds like a brilliant way to sort through the mass of entries!

Cool. Will get nominating later.

Are we supposed to judge on photo only or both?
~ stephanie

@stephanie - they will be judged based on both, but don't skip a striking image just because the text doesn't support it as well as it could.
~ Joe

Depends on what you define 'The Theatre of Everyday Life' as?
Theres a lot of pretty flower pics, but calling the subject as... 'The Theatre of Everyday Life'... I'm not so sure?
~ geo1903
Ok, I was more thinking the other way around; if the text shows the "theatre of life" but the pic not specifically. I would imagine photo should count more than text?
~ stephanie

@stephanie - yes, I'd definitely start with the picture then consider the text. This is a photography competition after all!
@geo1903 - how you choose to define 'The Theatre Of Everyday Life' is up to you, but I think a flower would have to be pretty unusual to fit the theme!

Great solution guys - simple, effective and best of all lots of fun!

Ingenious, and very fair certainly, though it does make it difficult to skim rapidly through a load of images, setting aside those that look interesting to return to later, which is how I'd prefer to select (making my own shortlists as it were).
I just spent 15 minutes clicking and nominated just two, because I had this idea we could only nominate three (as with the number of subs allowed). I now realise we can nominate as many as we like, so that makes it rather easier.
Still, I'd like to be able to set aside images for a second glance, and the only way I can do this, so far as I can see, is to open another page or tab., which is what I've been doing.
But congrats on solving the clique-voting issue, which really did need solving.
