Sunday 13 March 2011: Orton Plantation - Closed
When you pass this gate, you drive down a dirt road lined with 100+ year old Live Oak trees. It is an iconic picture from the Cape Fear region, not possible to see today. Orton Plantation, a former rice plantation turned into picturesque gardens many years ago were opened to the public until last year. Now, purchased by the family of the original owners, it is closed for renovation. We don't know whether or not it will re-open to the public anytime soon, or ever.
And? this is the best time of year to view the gardens. The azaleas and camellias will be in full bloom in a just a few weeks. The views of the Cape Fear River are spectacular, and the old plantation house looks it's best. Even the gators look friendly.
We now only have a view from behind this gate. Hopefully it will re-open soon.
Further down the road
I posted a Bannan back blip for yesterday if anyone is interested. I will try and catch up on comments tonight and tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the visit.
