Tuesday 19 April 2011: Jungle!
This will do nicely for this week's challenge - growth! The gunnera is well and truly on the move and I swear you can almost see it grow! We have three official outbursts of it, but it's impossible to get rid of so it pops up all over the place. It dies back completely in the winter then suddenly starts shooting forth. It's currently around 3ft tall but will go up to at least 8 if not 10 foot high and the diameter of each leaf will be at least 3 to 4 foot. You can also see the flowers - weird pollen-covered multi-stranded pink things. The stems and underside of the leaves have thick spikes. I don't think anything useful can be done with it but it looks very impressive at a pond's edge.
A nice day catching up with myself, lots of potting on of tomatoes and peppers, and sowing courgettes and another round of peas. Warm and drizzly, and the cuckoo has arrived!
