Sgwarnog: In the Field

Tuesday 19 April 2011: Soft Stone

I'm taking a quick break from marking to bring you today's blip, which features one of the fine cherry trees on Great Horton Road, Bradford.

The cherry tree frames the baroque tower of what is now known as the Old Building and currently occupied by Bradford College. This was originally built for the Bradford Technical School, and was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1882. The Technical School evolved into the Bradford Institute of Technology in 1959, before being granted chartered status as the University of Bradford in 1966, at which point a purpose built university campus was established next door, and the 'Old Building' was left to become the home of Bradford College.

I featured one of the stone carvings on the building a few weeks ago.
